the spaces in the restored Central School building for its galleries,
activity rooms, administrative offices, and collection storage spaces.

history, and examine issues affecting it today. Public programs and

Glacier National Park
Glacier
National Park was established in 1910. It is a land of mountain ranges
carved by prehistoric ice rivers. It features alpine meadows, deep
forests, waterfalls, about 50 glistening glaciers and 200 sparkling
lakes. The vistas seen from Going-To-The-Sun Road are breathtaking, a
photographers paradise. Relatively few miles of road exist in the
park's 1,600 square miles of picturesque landscape, thus preserving its
primitive and unspoiled beauty enlivened by a spring and summer
profusion of wildflowers.
Set in a rugged section of the northern Rockies, Glacier National
Park joins Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, Canada. Together
they create Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park World Heritage
Site - an ideal ‘two nation vacation.’ Going-to-the-Sun Road, a
spectacular 52-mile highway through Glacier, crosses the Continental
Divide at Logan Pass and traverses the towering Garden Wall. Maximum
vehicle dimensions over Logan Pass are 20 feet long (including bumpers)
and 8 feet wide (including mirrors). Oversize vehicles may be parked at
various points. Rental cars are available at nearby towns; a shuttle
service may be available, call the park for details.
| Mosie Bison Range
The
National Bison Range is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service as part of the National Wildlife Refuge System. It was
established in 1908 and is one of the oldest wildlife refuges in the
nation. A large portion of the 18,500-acre Range consists of native
Palouse Prairie. Forests, wetlands and streams are also found here
providing a wide range of habitats for wildlife. Elk, deer, pronghorn,
black bear, coyote, and ground squirrels are just some of the mammals
that share the area with 350 to 450 bison. More than 200 species of
birds also call this home and include eagles, hawks, meadowlarks,
bluebirds, ducks, and geese.
Other nearby areas administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
include Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge and Pablo National Wildlife
Refuge. These areas contain irrigation reservoirs located on
Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal lands. There are excellent
opportunities to view waterfowl, bald eagles, herons, cormorants, and a
wide variety of song birds.
| Wild Horse IslandThe
largest island in the largest freshwater lake (Flathead Lake) west of
Minnesota. Wild Horse Island has been a landmark since the
Salish-Kootenai Indians were reported to have used it to pasture horses
to keep them from being stolen by other tribes. The park is noted for
its wildlife including bighorn sheep, mule deer, songbirds, waterfowl,
bald eagles, and falcons, as well as three wild horses. Rare and
endangered plant species have also been found on its Palouse Prairie
grasslands. The island's scenic shoreline is a favorite of hikers,
boaters, swimmers and sailboat enthusiasts. Day-use only is allowed,
and there are other strict rules to ensure maintenance of its natural
character. There are no facilities and no fees.
